alternate names for palm oil

This list has been researched and compiled by Bev Luff. Bev started looking into palm oil ingredients in 2008 and then in late 2009 started to compile a list so she could educate others to detect palm oil in products. A first Bev only found 40 ingredients then 80 then 150 and what Bev has discovered is that this list is unfortunately a work in progress and she continues to research and add more names as she finds them.

This list is copyrighted so if you wish to use it on a website or in a publication you will need to send an email to Bev Luff at [email protected]  You may share this list on facebook and other social media as long as you share from the link on The With Compassion & Soul website www.withcompassion.com.au in the palm oil section and include the copyright mark below

Many food products have palm oil listed as 'vegetable oil' and in non-food products there are 100’s of alternate names for palm oil, this makes it difficult for people to know whether the product they wish to buy contains palm oil or a palm oil derivative.

If an ingredient in the product you are researching has any one of the following names then it is most likely to be palm oil unless you know the company has a clear 'no palm oil' policy and can prove it via documentation. Some of these ingredients may also be derived from other sources so if the product you are checking has one of the ingredients below you may want to contact the company to find out it's derivation.

Unfortunately the alternate names for palm oil list is HUGE, but I have written in alphabetical order for easier reference.

As to date (May 2017) there are only three vegetable oils which must be labelled in food products in Australia and New Zealand. The reason being potential allergic reactions and the three oils are - peanut oil, sesame oil and soy bean oil. All other vegetable oils can be labelled as vegetable oil and commonly are a palm oil blend. However, the label must declare the amount of saturated fat in the product. So if the label states vegetable oil and has a high saturated fat content it is highly likely that the vegetable oil will be palm oil or coconut and as coconut oil is much more expensive than palm oil it is more likely to be palm oil. This is a good way of identifying if a food product has palm oil in as other vegetable oils have very low saturated fat content. Non-food products are far more difficult to know at a glance and require further research hence why I have created this list to aid you when shopping.

Note: Please use the list below as a guide only, to 100% confirm that a product has Palm Oil or Palm Oil derivatives in it, email the company who makes the product to find out and ask for composition documentation. We suggest you print this list out & sick it on your toilet wall to read whilst otherwise occupied so that the names can be memorised.

The seeds of this list were sewn in late 2009 and it is updated regularly by Bev Luff.
