A Field Trip to The
Sponsored by With Compassion and The
(Please Note : This organisation has now closed but there are 3 others in Bali alldoing similar things)
After driving thru rural Bali we arrived at Canngu. There didn't seem to be anyone around but we started setting up under the verandah of the local meeting place. The verandah was dusty and empty. We swept the floor, cleaned the old table there and set up a small operating table. It was very hot and I was wondering how I was going to cope with watching the operations that were about to happen.
The Village
As we started to set up, a few villagers started arriving to see what we were doing. Then one by one people would arrive with their dogs and cats.
Villagers Bringing their Animals
They brought them on their backs, in bags, on motorbikes, some on rope but not many as dogs in bali don't have leads! As each arrived they would register (so follow up treatment could be done), wait in line and then their animal would get treated.
The Waiting Room
Registration & Treatment
The Surgery
We put the animals to sleep with an injection and then began surgery. Mainly neutering dogs (male and female) but a few cats also. We neutered a total of 25 animals in a 7hr surgery session. Other animals were treated with vaccinations or flea treatment, a few for skin problems and also pulled ticks off of many.
The Interest of the Villagers
The Villagers were very interested in what was happening and would stand around and watch the surgery. Many waited patiently in the waiting room for hours holding and stroking their pets and waiting for their turn. No cost was charged for the treatment.
It was an amazing experience for me to be a part of and a great free service to the village of Canggu.
